practice issues and policies curricula area. It covers most
of the core competencies including communication skills, professionalism,
patient safety, practice based learning, systems based practice,
and patient care.
Primary
Goals: An introductory course for all UTK first year residents
that combines the ACGME general competencies, the Institute
of Medicine guidelines for quality healthcare, National Patient
Safety Goals and quality healthcare initiatives proposed by
JCHO. This course will serve as the introductory learning experience
for all of these initiatives and will present a “snapshot” of
changes in the paradigm of graduate medical education from learning
alone to behavioral outcomes.
Resources:
The lecture series consist of didactic sessions with video,
audience response, and small group sessions.
Method
of Resident Evaluation: Residents are required to attend and
will be tested during arter several of these sessions. The results
of testing are to be used by the resident for self-assessment
and to re-enforce learning. The test results will not be placed
in any permanent resident record.
Method
of Venue Evaluation: After each day long session, the residents
will evaluate the day. Questions will cover the quality of the
presentations, the usefulness of the information, and the quality
of the presenter. This course has been awarded an ACGME commendation.
