Clinical training for the Adult Neurology Program is provided mainly at the nationally ranked University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) and affiliated clinics located in Knoxville. Our trainees and faculty are committed to providing exceptional patient care in a collegial environment, and several divisions are nationally recognized for their excellence. We have the twin advantages of being an academic training program without being a large one, where each trainee is well known and recognized for their achievements. We offer several unique programs that encourage our trainees to be critical thinkers; and that prepare them for the ever-changing needs of healthcare, both in the current milieu and for the future. In addition to our experienced faculty, we have outstanding support from ancillary staff in both the hospital and ambulatory clinic settings. We have a robust basic science research program, are rapidly expanding our clinical research, and have ongoing collaborations with other research institutions in and around Knoxville.
The Neurology Division is an integral part of the Department of Medicine, the largest department in the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM), the Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The department is comprised of 19 divisions and more than 180 faculty members. Our division has grown significantly in the last few years and we have 22 faculty members, including 12 women neurologists. Our program has access to specialty clinics including a state of the art Memory disorders clinic, Movement disorders clinic, ALS clinic, Neuromuscular/Neurophysiology clinic, Transition of Care (pediatric to adult) clinic, Neuroimmunology/MS Clinic, Pediatric Neurology clinic and Epilepsy/EMU clinics.
The mission of our Neurology Residency Program is to train the next generation of community-based general neurologists who will provide empathetic, evidence-based, quality yet cost-efficient care for their patients and families. Residents will be trained on the principles of equality and inclusiveness for the diverse population that they serve. Our residents will leave as well-rounded neurologists, with the habit of life-long learning, who are committed to improving access for underserved populations, focusing on efforts to decrease inequities and improving overall health outcomes in low-income and minority populations.
Sitting in the banks of the Tennessee River, Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee, but we are more than a college town. Our multicultural community embraces diversity with the classic southern hospitality. If you like classical music or Opera, you can rest assured that the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the Knoxville Opera will satisfy your needs. If you prefer musicals, Bijou and The Tennessee Theater will have you covered, with the annual Broadway Tour. If you are a sport enthusiast, you will love it here. From Football to Baseball and Basketball (Go Vols!), to minor league baseball or a short drive to Nashville to see the Tennessee Titans, you will have plenty of opportunities to learn and sing "Rocky Top." If you prefer nature, we sit just an hour from the amazing and breathtaking Smoky Mountains. We have it all, and we would like to share it with you!
