IV. CONFERENCES

Resident at BedsideA. Attendance

It is mandatory to have at least 60% attendance for all conferences over the course of the year. Conferences include: Grand Rounds, Ambulatory Care Conference, and M&M conference for all residents; also Morning Report for second and third year residents. Vacations and ICU rotation do not reduce the denominator for this calculation. It is not professional to sign in and leave. You must attend at least half of the conference to get credit for attending it.

B. Grand Rounds

Occur monthly on the second Tuesday at 8:00 AM in Morrison's Conference room. Board review is held on Tuesday mornings when there is no grand rounds or quarterly staff meeting.

C. Noon Conferences

Occur daily, except holidays, and are usually in the Department of Medicine Conference Room. Cardiology, Chest X-ray, and Geriatrics conferences are in Morrison's Conference Room. Conference schedules are e-mailed weekly and posted on the departmental intranet/internet sites.

D. Morning Report

Is conducted on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8:00 am in the conference room. Attendance is mandatory for second and third year residents on night-float, and house staff. and strongly encouraged for others.

E. Teaching Rounds

Teaching Rounds are held for ward teams on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 1030-1200, though post call teams are excused. The schedule is made prior to start of the month. The resident should tell the attending about the case at least one day before the teaching conference. It is the responsibility of the resident and to contact the teaching attending.

F. Journal Clubs

This conference is conducted once a month, typically the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Usually, two residents are chosen to read and critically appraise an article from a medical journal of their choice. Each resident needs to pick one article apiece. The schedule is made by the chief, and each PGY-2 and PGY-3 should review one article per year.
