* Residents interested in subspecialty fellowship training may elect a month of research
** Choice of either Community Medicine (Jefferson City or Oak Ridge) or Private Medicine (FIM - Turkey Creek)

*** Electives are offered in all the medical subspecialties as well as Hospitalist medicine, Sleep medicine, Occupational medicine, Rehabilitation medicine, and Podiatry.


Specialty rotation months feature cardiology A, gastroenterology and infectious diseases in the first year; endocrinology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology, and pulmonary in the second or third year; cardiology B is in the third year.

 

Conferences

Daily conferences are conducted at the lunch hour. In addition to the subspecialty conferences, monthly conferences are also held in psychiatry, sports medicine, clinical pharmacology and health policy/medical economics. Grand Rounds are held monthly on Tuesday mornings (click on noon conference schedule, which includes a list of upcoming Grand Rounds). Journal Club meets once a month. Monthly resident meetings are also an important part of the program.
Management rounds are conducted daily, and teaching rounds occur regularly. Morning report is scheduled three times a week.

Call Schedule

First year residents are on call every fourth night while in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU); every sixth night on ward medicine, with additional day call once every six days, and are on call every fifth to sixth night the rest of the year. Second year residents are on call every sixth to seventh night, and third year residents are on call three to four times a month, except in the ICU when they are on call every fourth night.
