- The
resident is excused to attend their ambulatory clinic.
Goals
and Objectives:
The
primary goal is to add to the breadth of outpatient experience by
training at a rural Medicine/Pediatrics practice. This includes
the outpatient management of the commonly seen ambulatory diagnoses
to include adolescents, interesting pediatric cases and nursing
home residents.
The resident will evaluate, correctly diagnose
and manage patients with the following problems:
- Orthopedics:
major joint and back pain, hand disorders and acute injuries
- Dermatology:
rashes, including interesting pediatric cases, burns
- Adolescent:
pelvic exams, attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity
- Neurology:
headaches, chronic pain, stroke management
- General
IM: hypertension, COPD, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, CAD
- Urology:
urolithiasis, prostate disease
- Geriatrics:
problems commonly encountered in a nursing home setting, on site
- Systems-Based
Practice: time with billing and office management, in office lab
testing, use of Electronic Medical Records

Procedures:
The resident will have the opportunity to participate in skin
biopsies and joint injections.
Research
Opportunities: Faculty members will be happy to assist with a practice
improvement project or preparation of a case report.
Evaluation:
Each resident will be informally and continually evaluated
based on interactions with faculty during the course of the rotation.
A summative evaluation will be completed by the supervising attending
using a printed version of New Innovations. Feedback will be given
on a frequent basis with discussion of the overall performance at
the rotation end by the supervising attending.
