Newborn Screening

The coordinator of Newborn Screening provides follow-up services and receives, interprets, and responds to all abnormal newborn screening results for all infants in a 36 county area of East Tennessee in order to decrease morbidity and mortality. This insures that appropriate rescreening, diagnostic testing, and follow-up is provided to all infants with an abnormal screen and is available to respond to parental concerns and questions.

The coordinator provides educational presentations to primary care providers, their nursing staff, health department nurses and other health care providers, and at risk community members. Also, the newborn screening coordinator provides education, counseling, and social work services to families of infants diagnosed with sickle cell disease as well as provides outreach education and free hemoglobinopathy testing to at risk populations.
