Sports Medicine
Scholarly Activity
The University of Tennessee Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow is encouraged to pursue scholarly activity during the fellowship year, including clinical and academic research. Fellows can design or implement their own projects, but given time constraints, it is often easier to join ongoing research conducted by faculty members. Current investigations include concussion management, ECG screening and the prevention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes, and regenerative tissue therapies such as platelet rich plasma. Fellows are also encouraged to submit case presentations to local or national academic conferences.
Fellows who match in the program should consider their interests and discuss them with faculty members soon after the match to maximize their time and planning in fellowship as abstracts for most local and national academic conferences, including AMSSM or ACSM, are due by November/December of their fellowship year. Fellows presenting at local or national conferences can obtain CME funds for each of their presentations.
Aside from these conferences, the fellow is often asked to give lectures in the medical center, family medicine residency, and to coaches, athletes, or other members of the community. Teaching is encouraged and will provide the fellow with the opportunity to mentor and guide other clinicians.
