Letter to Applicant

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our program. You’ll find the primary care sports medicine opportunities offered in our fellowship to be one of the best in the country and can give you the skills to be a leader in the field sports medicine. Our faculty have been team physicians for Olympic, national, collegiate, and high school programs and can provide mentorship throughout your training here and beyond.

The fellow will have ample opportunities to work with athletes from the point of injury through the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation process. In addition, we encourage our fellow to educate athletes, coaches and the community concerning injury prevention, while providing a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The consultants and resources offered in our academic medical center provide comprehensive care often not found in other settings.

Fellows rotate in a variety of settings ranging from private orthopedic offices (Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic), to UT student health sports medicine clinics, and our University Family Physicians Sports Medicine Clinic. Fellows provide coverage for the Knoxville Ice Bears Professional Ice Hockey team, as well as, a variety of sports at the University of Tennessee & Carson Newman College, the National Golden Gloves Boxing Program, and local high schools. Fellows also participate in mass endurance event coverage including the Knoxville Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon. In addition, Knoxville is home to the Knoxville Track Club, FC Alliance Soccer Academy, and to many individuals who lead active lifestyles. These provide plenty of opportunities for injury assessment, casting and splinting, radiographic interpretation, joint injection, sports nutrition, exercise treadmill, and training room experiences.

Our Thursday morning sports academic conferences include an MSK ultrasound curriculum, case conferences, radiology conference, journal club, and didactics from specialists located in our academic and community settings.

The UT Sports Medicine Fellowship will prepare you for any career in sports medicine. Graduates practice in both the academic and community settings and include faculty, clinicians, researchers, pro/collegiate/high school team physicians, and contributors to local & national sports medicine societies. The UT Sports Medicine Fellowship is accredited through the ACGME and fellows are eligible to sit for the CAQ exam in sports medicine following successful completion of the fellowship program.

While enjoying your fellowship, you’ll have time to experience scenic views from Lake Norris, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, the Smoky Mountains, the Tennessee River, and other local treasures where you’ll encounter bears, bald eagles, and other wildlife in their natural habitats.

The UT Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship will prepare you for any career in sports medicine, especially for those individuals who are motivated to make the most of his/her experiences. For those who are willing, this program will give you the tools you need to become a leader in sports medicine as a clinician, educator, researcher, and team physician. Our fellowship start date is July 1.

We look forward to your application,

The UT Sports Medicine Fellowship Faculty
