Sports Medicine
Curriculum Overview
Longitudinal and specialty clinical experiences provide a wide range of primary care and musculoskeletal issues in active individuals of all ages.
Monthly rotations include:
- Five months of primary care sports medicine
- Four months of orthopedics including care of hand, foot, knee, shoulder, and back subspecialties
- One month of physical therapy and rehabilitation.
- Two electives months, which can be arranged from a variety of disciplines such as cardiology, rheumatology, sports nutrition, etc.
Fellows are required to perform a half day per week of primary care.
Team physician experience is garnered throughout the year. The fellow will serve as the team doctor for a local high school and will be available to provide training rooms as needed. Coverage also includes working with some of the University of Tennessee women’s varsity athletic events, such as soccer. UT Athletics is a member of the SEC conference and teams are often ranked nationally at the Division I level.
The fellow is one of the primary team physicians for Carson Newman College (Division II) football and other sports teams within the program. The fellow will conduct his/her own continuity training room clinic at least once per week at this institution. Carson Newman College sponsors nearly 500 student athletes per year in 16 intercollegiate sports. In addition, the fellow will work at the Knoxville Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, State High School Wrestling Tournament, and other local sporting events.
Scholarly activity is required according to ACGME standards. These educational opportunities are coupled with our weekly sports medicine academic conferences and journal club.
