Fellowships - Sports Medicine
"Delivering competent preventive healthcare and rehabilitation to a variety of athletes"
The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship offered through the University of Tennessee's Graduate School of Medicine is a one-year accredited fellowship. Sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine, the fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive experience that will enable the fellow to apply primary care medical training to the assessment, treatment and management of sports injury in a compassionate, ethical, efficient and economical manner. Patients may range from the professional, collegiate and high school athlete to the "weekend warrior." The fellow will have ample opportunities to work with athletes from the point of injury through the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation process. The fellow will also have opportunities to educate athletes, coaches and the community concerning injury prevention and to determine when and how to interact with coaches, patients and others in medical decision-making.
Curriculum
The sports medicine curriculum includes five months of primary care sports medicine; four months of orthopedics, including care of hand, foot, knee, shoulder, back subspecialties; and one month of physical therapy and rehabilitation. The fellow may select two electives from radiology, nutrition, pediatric orthopedics, cardiology, and rheumatology. Each elective is based on the equivalent of a one-month rotation but may be longitudinal in some rotations. Application
Interviews are considered desirable and are scheduled October to December prior to the application year. Fellows are selected through the National Resident Matching Program, which administers the awarding of sports medicine fellowships. Applications are made and interviews arranged through the Department of Family Medicine's residency coordinator.
