Division of Preventive Medicine

By longstanding tradition, Family Medicine has been deeply involved in preventive medicine services. From "cradle to grave" anticipatory guidance of healthy lifestyle practices is promoted by family physicians to their patients and communities. During a resident's month on Community Resource, time is spent at the Knox County Health Department where they are introduced to local resources and community services. Through the Department of Family Medicine a variety of preventive medicine services are offered to our patients and the community as a whole. These include an Occupational Health service, which provides health care services for employees of local businesses and industries, including injury prevention and treatment, and health promotion activities. The Division of Preventive Medicine is Directed by M. David Stockton, MD, MPH.

The Employee Health Services is administered through the Harry Lyon Clinical Center. Two members of the Preventive Medicine Division, Dr. Don Keeble and Dr. David Stockton, are designated Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) by the Federal Aviation Administration and provide First, Second and Third class aviation examinations for both local and nationwide pilots.

Representatives from the department are active participants and contributing presenters at the East Tennessee Public Health Forum, a community action group made up of members of the Regional and Local Health Departments, the Department of Health and Safety Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Department of Nutrition , University Student Health Services , and the Department of Family Medicine. This group considers national, state and county health issues.
