Fellowships - Homeland Security Studies

Patrick O'Brien, MD

Pat O'Brien, MD is an emergency physician who has had a longstanding interest and participation in areas related to the broad field that encompasses Homeland Security. A graduate of Vanderbilt University (B.A.) and the Medical University of South Carolina (M.D.), he completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University . Upon graduation, be became Chief, Prehospital Care at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX in command of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as well as an attending physician in the Emergency Department. He became board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine at that time. He served on the San Antonio EMS Coordinating Committee and taught field medicine in continuous medical readiness training.

Dr. O'Brien moved to Knoxville , TN and joined a private practice Emergency Medicine group. He also served in the Tennessee Air National Guard. He became active in EMS as a member of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine EMS Committee and became medical director of the Knoxville Fire Department EMS.

Interest in research and development led to collaborative work with researchers from the Oak Ridge complex in Oak Ridge , TN on a variety of projects of both a civilian and military nature. Due to this interest, Dr. O'Brien moved to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 1995 to pursue his interest in teaching, Emergency Medicine, research & development, and patient care.

Dr. O'Brien became Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director of the Emergency Department in 1999. He has since stepped down from that position and currently serves as the Associate Medical Director, EMS/Homeland Security. He serves on the Tennessee Hospital Advisory Committee on Bioterrorism, the Tennessee Emergency Communications Subcommittee, the Clinical Issues Committee of the state EMS Board, and as medical director for three EMS systems. He has spoken over the years to numerous conferences and organizations on a variety of topics including disaster medicine, EMS , and new technology in out of hospital care. He continues to practice Emergency Medicine and clinically teach at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
