F. Matthew Mihelic, M. D.

Dr. Matt Mihelic, M.D. is originally from Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . He received his undergraduate degree (B.S.) from Loyola University of Chicago where he majored in both biology and psychology, and where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1979. His medical degree (M.D.) was also earned at Loyola University of Chicago in 1982. He did his residency training in family medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham 's Family Medicine Residency Program in Montgomery , Alabama , and he finished there in 1985. During residency he gained extensive emergency medicine experience, and he practiced emergency medicine for two years after residency. He entered private practice in family medicine in 1987, and practiced successfully for thirteen years in Alabama . In 2000, he accepted a position as an assistant professor with The University of Tennessee's Graduate School of Medicine, and he is currently a full-time faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency Program there. He has been board certified in family medicine since 1986, and he has had extensive clinical experience in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency medicine. His current practice of medicine covers the broad spectrum of family medicine which he teaches to residents, and includes adult medicine, geriatric medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and minor surgery. In June 2003 he completed a one year Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University , with an emphasis on curriculum development.
Dr. Mihelic has had a long-standing interest in homeland defense issues, and is the Director of the Center for Homeland Security Studies at the University of Tennessee 's Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville, and is also the Director of the Graduate Medical Fellowship in Homeland Security Studies there. In 2004 and 2005 he served as the Mass Care Assessment Leader of the Regional Technology Integration Initiative team that was organized through the National Security Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Homeland Security. He has lectured on the subjects of bioterrorism and nuclear terrorism to both medical and non-medical groups many times since coming to The University of Tennessee.
Dr. Mihelic is a member of the Tennessee-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (TN1-DMAT) that has been organized at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee . He is also the director of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Medical Reserve Corps unit. He has completed instructor level training in Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS). He also holds instructor level certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), provider level certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and provider level certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). He has also undergone training at the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center Training Site (REAC/TS) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
