For Course Directors
Guidelines for Supporting a Single Program Presentation for Accreditation
Thank you for your interest in supporting a program for continuing medical education credits. The University of Tennessee Health and Science Center College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Through this accreditation, The University sponsors accredited continuing medical education programs in accordance with the "Essential Areas and Policies" set forth by the ACCME. The following information will guide you through the required accreditation process.
The Continuing Medical Education (CME) Conference Coordinator must be kept informed and involved in all planning meetings. Notes from all meetings discussing the proposed presentation must be either typed or handwritten and submitted to CME for the course file. CME will need to be informed of all vendors who are providing unrestricted educational grants to support faculty.
To begin the process of program approval, completely fill out the Application for Continuing Medical Education Credit For Single Programs. This form requires the following information:
- A Course Director from The University of Tennessee Faculty
Role of the Course Director: Course directors must be considered knowledgeable in the field that is being discussed during the educational offering. The Course Director is responsible for approving appropriately credentialed speaker(s) and program topics. Course directors may or may not choose program locations or special social functions, but suggestions and collaboration on all events are strongly encouraged, for the overall quality and content of the program.
-
An established Needs Assessment and Objectives must be determined.
The needs assessment must contain the method in which the topic was chosen as well as why it was chosen. For example; "When polled, physicians felt that diabetes management adds to patient care and has been raised as a quality issue for education by the quality monitoring staff." Objectives must be specific, reachable and measurable. The following example refers to the above needs assessment: "The physicians will be able to list three new methods or protocols for monitoring diabetic control."
-
You must also indicate the targeted audience that will benefit most from your program topic.
-
Speaker/Faculty Information - List names, titles, institutional affiliations, social security numbers, addresses, telephone/fax numbers, and email addresses. In addition to each speaker's information, please provide his or her respective honoraria, lecture date/s and time/s, and relevant details. It is the University's policy that the supporting company process payment through CME for all speakers being paid an honorarium. CME will correspond with the faculty confirming the honorarium and other expenses designated by the vendor. Please keep in mind that it takes several weeks to process the paper work to pay the faculty, so honoraria information must be submitted immediately upon establishing the program.
Draft Announcement
In addition to the completed Application for Continuing Medical Education Credit For Single Programs you must submit a draft of the announcement ( please see the sample announcement for proper wording ), a time specific schedule, list of the faculty, institutional affiliations and each faculty member's curriculum vitae. Each participating faculty member must complete a "Faculty Disclosure Form" upon approval of program accreditation.
Educational Grants
The Department of Continuing Dental & Medical Education can provide payment for all activities associated with the program through your unrestricted educational grant. However, the grant must include all expenses of the program including the administrative fee.
Credit letters, evaluation forms, and participants list will need to be picked up by the Supporting Company prior to the program for distribution.
Post Program
Within 5 working days after the program, the supporting company must return Evaluation Forms for tabulation and the signed participant attendance list. These documents are a requirement for the course files. Any CME property that may have been used for the program must also be returned at this time.
Announcement Requirements
The University of Tennessee CME must approve the final copy of brochures/announcements prior to publication. It will be the responsibility of the jointly sponsoring company or agency to reprint announcements/brochures if materials are printed prior to approval and are not in compliance with ACCME standards. If these requirements are not met, program approval may be withdrawn and credit may be denied to participants.
