The Burden of Diabetes Lies in its Complications
While the cost, morbidity and mortality from diabetes, itself, is high, its numerous complications and associated risk factors account for the overwhelming burden of this disease.
Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates 2-4 times higher than non-diabetics, and their risk of death from stroke is 2.8 times higher. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure in adults and results in a ten-fold increase in amputations. Of people with diabetes, 60-70% have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage, and the incidence of periodontal disease, sexual dysfunction, complications of pregnancy and susceptibility to other illnesses are all significantly increased.

The Sixth Annual Diabetes Regional Conference will decipher the latest medical research into practical, clinical approaches for reducing, preventing and treating some of the major complications of diabetes. The goal is to provide the medical community with evidence-based interventions to improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients at risk for diabetes and its complications.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this program the participant should be able to
- Explain the interrelationships between strategies of diabetes management and common complications of diabetes
- Evaluate evidence-based strategies for the prevention, screening and treatment of common complications of diabetes
- Identify the interventions, including lifestyle changes, motivational strategies and pharmacological treatments, which are most appropriate for patients at various stages of the disease
- Analyze data to optimize drug therapy
- Identify drug interactions in diabetic patients
