Agenda

Course Overview

The burden of cancer on our population is expected to rise sharply over the next 20 years.  Overall the number of cancer cases is expected to increase by 20% in between 2010 and 2020, with increases largely reflecting an aging population. By 2030, approximately 70% of all cancers will be diagnosed in older adults, and 28% of all cancers will be diagnosed in minorities. As examples, Leukemia is expected to increase by 2% per year.  Ovarian cancer is the 5th leading cause of death in women and the most common gynecologic cause of death. Melanoma is increasing in incidence by at least 2% per year for those over 50 years of age.

Additionally, the disparities based on socioeconomics, race, education level achieved, and population density continues to contribute to the difference in outcomes for cancer incidence and cancer mortality.  Not only are new therapies needed, but new approaches to address disparities are needed to ensure the greatest impact on reducing the impact of cancer in our communities.

We are moving from the classic model of physician decision-making to shared decision-making and that is going to make a big impact on cancer care. There is growing understanding nationwide of the need for a comprehensive approach to the treatment of cancer patients. Based on data from many scientific trials demonstrating the benefits of multimodal treatments for various cancers, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) is strongly encouraging member institutions to provide more emphasis on a cohesive, comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to each individual cancer patient. A greater commitment on clinical trial accrual is also encouraged, and this is best coordinated via comprehensive cancer tumor board conferences.

The timing of this meeting in the fall allows for the latest findings in clinical cancer research from major oncology conferences to be presented and discussed. This educational activity also meets a unique need for East Tennessee to provide a group of networked and collaborating practitioners to discuss the most recent developments in oncology care in the context of local treatment approaches and patient populations.
