Tee Up for Trauma

 

University Anesthesiologists was a primary sponsor for the 3rd annualTee Up for Trauma.  The goal of this year's fund raiser was to raise funds to purchase an ultrasound unit for the Anesthesia-Surgery Critical Team to be used in the evaluation of critically-ill patients. Participating members from the Department of Anesthesiology included:(left) Dr. Ed “5-Putt on a Good Day” Mobley, “Pay Me Fifty Bucks and I'll Play with Them” Sam Henderson, David “I Don't Need No Stinking Hybrid” Bonum and Dr. Jack “They Call Me Mr. Calloway” Chavez. Other members of the department who participated (right) include: Dr. Craig “Hook ‘Em” Combs, Dr. Corey “Slice and Dice” Carpenter, Matt “How Did I Get Stuck with these Guys” Cunningham, and Colin “Grip and Rip It” Clanton. According to the unbiased reporting of Dr. Mobley, the seasoned staff members destroyed the trainees in rout which brought tears to the “Georgia Boys.

 

Adios 2008

The following residents graduated from the University of Tennessee Department of Anesthesiology in 2008: Corey Carpenter, Craig Combs, David Eckard, Tom Higley, Brian Shepherd, Matt Sherrer, and Jeff Staack. Dr. Carpenter (Medical College of Georgia) as well Dr. Shepherd ( University of Kentucky ) will be entering private practice in Chattanooga , TN. Drs. Combs ( Lousiana State University ) and Staack ( University of Iowa ) will join University Anesthesiologists and complete fellowships in cardiac anesthesiology and pain management respectively. Drs. Eckard (Mercer), Higley ( University of Tennessee ) and Sherrer (University of Alabama-Birmingham) will enter private practice in Rome , GA ; Maryville , TN and Birmingham , AL .

The Department of Anesthesiology would like to welcome the Class of 2011 who will be starting their residency in July 2008. Excellence in Teaching

 

The graduating anesthesiology residents in the Class of 2008 awarded Dr. Robert Craft and Dr. Don Pearson the coveted “Excellence in Teaching” Award to the staff anesthesiologist who demonstrates great dedication, vast knowledge and immense skill in resident education. Congratulation to both of them!

ASA Legislative Conference 2008

Jonathan DiRuzzo, MD (2010) accompanied Drs. Cox and Bustamante to the ASA Legislative Confernce to garner support for the elimination of the teaching penalty in anesthesiology.

      

 

 

War Heroes: Kidd, Whitaker & Simmons

Several graduates of The Department of Anesthesiology have served with distinction in the War on Terrorism in both Iran and Afghanistan . Former residents who have served in the defense of our country include: Jeff Simmons (Class of 2006), Greg Whitaker (Class of 2005) and Paul Kidd (Class of 1992). Dr. Simmons serves as the leader of a Critical Care Air Transport Team in Landstuhl , Germany where he brings critically-ill patient back to the USA for further treatment. National Geographic magazine featured an article on: Irag War Medicine” where photographs of Dr. Whitaker caring for our soldiers could be seen.

 

In particular, the former colleagues of Dr. Paul Kidd in the Department of Anesthesiology at UTMCK would like to recognize his valiant and meritorious service to our country while serving as the Chief of Anesthesia Services at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan . According to his commander, Paul “handled a crushing workload with unbelievable grace, competence and success. Most importantly, he saved lives.” For his efforts, Dr, Kidd received two Bronze Stars. Please keep all of the members of the military serving in defense of our country in your prayers!
