The Graduate School of Medicine
The Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) provides graduate-level training through a broad spectrum of medical and dental residency and fellowship programs. Undergraduate training is offered to medical students in core and senior clerkships as well as electives.
Given the breadth of its mission, the Dean of the GSM reports directly to the Chancellor and Vice President for Health Affairs whose office is located in Memphis. In turn, the Chancellor reports to the President of the University of Tennessee who is responsible to the Board of Trustees.
University Health System
University Health System (UHS), Incorporated came into existence in 1999 when the University of Tennessee hospital separated to become its own entity. University Health System (UHS), a regional health system, comprises the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital, Physician Management Group, UT Health Network, and various partnerships and joint ventures with physicians and health care companies. While University Health System comprises much more than the hospital, it is the hospital component that is essential to the Graduate School of Medicine's mission. Consequently, the Graduate School of Medicine is affiliated with University Health System and together they form the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The Joint Committee on Medical Education works on behalf of both entities to develop state-of-the art programs for education, research, and patient care.
